Is That Ethical?
Is it ethical? Does it convey integrity? Will God truly be glorified by my actions? At MMI this morning, Todd Rhoades has a post on things that tick him off! Well, in the last few weeks I have observed a pastor from a distance involved in some very unethical behavior, and learned of the affairs of two other pastors that I have known and respected for years. I pray for their redemption, restoration, and their families, but it TICKS ME OFF that guys who seem to have everything coming their way in the ministry can't control their lusts!
So, I was just wondering how many pastors or staff members out there have ever taken the time to write down a personal Code of Ethics. Now, the Wikipedia article just gives a "business" perspective on this. When I was at Southern Seminary several years ago, Dr. David Gushee taught ethics and required all of us to work through the semester on a personal code of ethics - with the final product being our final grade. Dr. Gushee really made me think - and I have never been sorry that I produced the code. Sure, if a minister can violate the scripture with scummy behavior, he can violate his own code of ethics. But, I have given every ministry in which I have been involved a copy of my code. Then I tell them to hold me accountable to it. It is a great tool to put into the hands of a search committee - it answers many questions that they may have.
I am posting my code of ethics in the blog for you to read. Tell me what you think.
